Very addictive. I was just gonna try it out for a couple minutes; three hours later my wife is telling me dinner's ready. It's kind of a combination of Panzer General, the old Great Naval Battles series, and classic Battleship. It's very easy to learn, but the unique combination of engrossing tactical play, consequential strategic manuevering and construction planning give it more depth than one typically sees from "beer and pretzel" wargames. For example, you can modify a ship's weapon configurations every time you build a new one! Want a AA destroyer to protect your carrier strike group? Pull off all the standard turrets and build one!
The tactical gameplay is somewhat "arcade-y," but still quite fun. There is something immensely satisfying about hitting it lucky by getting the range on your first shot and then unloading a broadside into the enemy vessel, or baiting a rampaging enemy battleship into position so your submarine which is lurking just around the headland can slam a couple of fish into it...
If you're a naval warfare fan who has been starving for a fun wargame that doesn't require a copy of Jane's to play, this is your game.. Good game!
- Satisfying combat
- A good assortment of historical ship types
- Challenges both historical and tactical
Not perfect though:
- A lot of simplifications were made for game balance purposes, so don't expect a high level of authenticity. Naval historians may cringe from time to time.
- The "Unlock" system is how the game forces you to "learn" by proceeding through increasingly complex battles until you "earn" the right to build certain ship types. However, it's not hard to go through the battles on medium difficulty level, and to unlock the most valuable stuff takes only a few hours of gameplay. I honestly did not mind going through it.
Overall, it's a good balance between historical realism, decent graphics and quick-and-easy combat. I look forward to further efforts along these lines.. It's a really fun game for lovers of naval combat and can offer hours of play in the campaign and multiplayer modes. That said... battles can drag on for quite a while as it takes time to show each shot fired by the enemy and can at times be VERY boring.. You've got to be kidding me!
What a terrible game!
Don't waste your money. Not the most in depth or challenging campaign. Good for a few head to head battles with friends but apart from that, pretty sucky game.. I just bought this 2 days ago and I really like this little number.
+ easy to see what the game will be like before buying. (a) strategic map giving context to individual battles (b) Worms-style individual battles
+ battle system good - a lot of sensible things happen e.g a shot lands in the water just next to the ship, it damages the ship a little, an extra 3 metres away it doesn't. Or the fact that when a ship is hit, weapons can be damaged or the hull damaged - both will weaken the ship but sometimes a very weak enemy will still have all weapons firing and therefore be very dangerous (a near dead battleship destroyed a fullhealth destroyer of mine and nearly took out a 2nd before I learnt this lesson...).
+ some depth in choosing ship combos and favourite weapons aside from manoeuvring ships. Torpedos have a short range but boy do they hurt.
+ responsive and active dev
- battles can be a little slow for some and enjoyment seems to depend on whether you like angles/numbers. I do. If you don't, give this game a miss.
- strategic map could have extra layers to make it more like a Total War game e.g. building various buildings that unlock more powerful ships etc
Overall: 8.5/10 - simple game, but does it well.. Great little game!. If you like turn based games, then this is one you should definitely get. I played it using the HTC Vive VR system and the detail and user interface is incredible. I spend the game standing waist deep in the ocean surrounded by my fleet and I can zoom all the way in to where I am standing next to the ship or zoom out as if I'm looking down from a high-altitude plane. This is the old Battleship board game (H9, I7, "...you sunk my battleship!...") on steroids. Instead of just point and shoot you have to gauge distance for each shot you take and have a mix of warships, including the aircraft carrier with fighter/bomber planes. I setup my attack and then stand next to the ship I'm attacking fully zoomed-in so I can see the hit. After enough hits, the ships start showing visible damage and flames / smoke / disabled guns or rudders, etc.
The game contains a Campaign mode, which I don't have the time to play but which looks fun, and customizable single and multiplayer games where you can select the map and ships and even the guns on each of your ships. The multiplayer is originally locked but I emailed the developer who replied within a day and who unlocked the multiplayer plus everything else in the game, per my request. This alone warrants a second look at the game if you haven't already bought it.
The only suggestions that I would have for this game are to have more visible damage (ie - visible damage after every hit) and land based attacks (ie - destroy ports or coastal forts/entrenchments with your fleet)
On a related note, I also read this developer is working on a land-based game, so it'll be interesting to see what's involved in that game whenever it is released.. It is like axis and allies alot but is fun. You have to plan most of your actions in advance. Don't like that you can hit your own ships if you don't watch were the ships are. They are sometimes really close and the back ships start first... it a great game but it need a all of stuff need to be made

Just in time for Star Wars!. Atlantic Expansion Fundraising Ending Today:
The Indiegogo fundraising campaign for the Atlantic expansion will end today at midnight PST. Although the campaign has little chance of being fully funded, the amount we have raised so far along with the sales from the Steam launch are enough to guarantee that the Atlantic campaign will be completed and be available as a free update to the PC/Mac versions of the game.
With the amount raised the process to complete the Atlantic expansion will take several months, but if you would like to see it completed sooner and want to help the game's development please take a moment to share the campaign link with your social networks or make a contribution via Indiegogo.
Every bit helps to keep the game's development going with future expansions and feature updates.
Remember that there are special rewards for people who share the campaign the most. Check this update for details:
Thank you everyone who has made a contribution or helped us spread the word, and thanks for all the great reviews and feedback on the game!
